Welcome
to P.E.T. Project Texas, Inc.
What is P.E.T.?
P.E.T.
is both a faith based,
volunteer driven, 501(c)(3) 100% not for profit
organization and an acronym for the Personal Energy Transportation
vehicle that is constructed and distributed at no cost to the recipient
to provide
mobility to disabled
children and adults worldwide.
Who is P.E.T. Project Texas, Inc.?
In 2009 the United Methodist
Men's group of First United Methodist Church in Bryan, Texas inherited
a shop full of equipment and parts to build P.E.T. vehicles to ship
worldwide. With the help of many volunteers from several
churches, local businesses
and different groups, men, women, and kids of all ages have
made the dream to do "hands-on" mission work a reality. Are you
looking for a way to make a difference in the world? Volunteer
with P.E.T. and watch the work of your hands quite literally change
lives.
How did P.E.T. begin?
History
P.E.T. began as a wish to fulfill a need seen by Rev. Larry Hills a
Methodist missionary on a 1994 trip to Zaire. On this trip Rev.
Hills met survivors of polio and land mine accidents who had no use of
their legs but lived in environments where the use of traditional
wheelchairs was impossible. Rev. Hills and his
wife Laura spoke with Rev. Mel West about producing a wheelchair
that was simple to operate and sturdy enough for use in the roughest
terrain. Rev. West involved product
designer Earl Miner in fabricating a prototype built to be sturdy,
simple to use and cost effective. In 1996, four prototypes
were sent to Zaire for testing with the instructions to "Put these in
the worst places you can find and see if they pass the test."
Based on the performance of those first prototypes, P.E.T.s went
into production.
In 1997, P.E.T. production
expanded into other countries, beginning
with Mozambique. In 2000, to meet growing demand, West opened a shop in
Columbia, Missouri. A second US facility
was opened in Penney Farms, Florida by
the Hills that same year. In 2003, a third facility was established in
Luling, Texas. In 2009 the Luling, Texas shop relocated Bryan,
Texas (that's us!)
In 2004, to help manage the growth and production of P.E.T.s, Pet
International was incorporated, with a Board of Trustees and staff to
help manage all issues related to assembling and distributing P.E.T.s.
The
cost of the components for a P.E.T. have dropped to $250 from the
initial
amount of over $300.
